When Dr. Walter B. Holcomb closed the door behind him as he left his office last Tuesday, he closed the door on a bit of local history that stretches back to the turn of the century. Holcomb, 61, sold his beterinary clinic on New Street and retired after 40 years as a veterinarian - 37 of them in the New Street facility started in 1904 by the late Dr. Valentine Knapp. Holcomb retired "because I would just like to,: he said. He is a shy, quiet man with large, beefy hands that seem to belong to a laborer or someone not involved with delicate animal surgery. Wehn he joined Knapp in 1938 he became part of one fo the only two veterinary clinics in the area.
Dr. Holcomb and Dr. Knapp ran a "mixed practice" then, large or small animals. In 1940 Dr. Knapp died and Dr. Holcomb became sole owner. He removed the large animal operating table and most of the large animal stalls, adding some more kennel and expanding the building. Today the facility could kennel 70 dogs and cats.
Dr. Holcomb stated, "I haven't the faintest idea" how many animals he has treated in the past 37 years. he sorted throught a desk drawer and came out with a numbered certificate book which showed he spayed more than 12,000 dogs. And he can't even begin to count the number of times he's been kicked by hourses or cows, bitten by dots or scratched by cats - or how many tons of meat he's inspected at Danbury's two shaughter houses before both went out of business in the early 1960's.
Walter Holcomb has been a member of the Association since August 1940; president in 1953 and has continued to support the activities of the Association by a near perfect attendance at continuing education programs and quarterly meetings. Franklin specialized in political issues in the Foreign Service and served in Washington, Switzerland, Italy, Argentina, France and Algeria. He retired in 1975. During World War II, Mr. Holcombe served in Europe and North Africa as a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps reserves, participating in Allied landings in France, Morocco and Sicily. Born in the District, he lived here and at Marine facilities in the United States, Cuba and China while growing up. He attended Sidwell Friends School and graduated from St. George's School, a preparatory school in Rhode Island. He attended University of Heidelberg in Germany in 1937 and later graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1939.
Mr. Holcombe, a yachtsman and an ocean sailboat racer, was a member of both the New York Yacht Club and the Cruising Club of the Chesapeake. He also belonged to the Chevy Chase Club and the Metropolitan Club.

A riviter in World War II. She was born on the family farm in Broome County, NY. When she was two years old, she pulled a diper of boiling water from the stove over her head. He mother grabbed her and dipped her headfirst into a barrel of rain water outside. It was winter and the water was very cold. The doctor was called and it was his opinion that this probably saved her life. She enjoyed living in the country. She attended New Hartford High School, in New Hartford, NY. This was a four mile walk from the farm. When she was 14 she spent her summer vacation working 48 hours per week in a silk mill. She spent the following two summers working 60 hours per week in a weaving mill. She moved to California in 1912. She attended business school at night and when she was 20 she got a job in a doctor's office and worked there for three years as his private secretary. She worked at McConnell Douglas as a riviter during World War II. In her later life, she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and the Rebecca's Lodge. When interviewed in 1979, she said that of any age, she would have liked to have been 20 again. It was at this age that she most enjoyed life, being free from her mother's apron strings. She remembered her father as being a quiet farmer and felt secure with him. He enjoyed parties and dances. She remembered her mother as being a wonderful, ambitioius perrson. I was placed in fostercare at 3 days of age, remaining in the same fostercare home until March 16, 1959 (just over 2-1/2 yrs.) At that time, I was placed in the Holcomb home where the adoption became final in June 1960 when my name was legally changed from
Donna Jean Ellis to Donna Jean Holcomb. Our "confidentiality of adoption" laws are such that the State of CT even provided a "legally falsified" birth certificate listing Gardner P. Holcomb and Margaret C. Case as my birthparents!!! (I am the second of their two adopted daughters.)
